With iPads hugely popular during shutdowns around the world, rumor monger Mark Gorman claims that Apple will roll out great upgrades as soon as possible next month (April 2021). Aside from predictable design tweaks and increased performance, Apple may return the iPad Mini with a larger screen and add Thunderbolt connectivity to the iPad Pro. So things seem to be moving forward in a pleasant direction!
The new Apple iPad Pro for 2021 is expected to look and mostly resemble the same model last year. However, a new chipset is reportedly being acquired whose speed and efficiency are in line with the M1 processor running in the latest MacBooks. Mini-LED screens are also a possibility, providing improved brightness and contrast ratios. Screen diagonals will remain 11 inches and 12.9 inches.
Reportedly, test models use Thunderbolt connections instead of USB. This may give the iPad Pro a noticeable performance and an increase in productivity. Thunderbolt supports faster charging speeds and serial devices, so iPad can become part of a larger setup with external displays, hard drives, and other peripherals. Meanwhile, the Type-C port remains the same and is still USB compatible, so the accessories you already own won’t be out of date.
Moving down the line, the base iPad will be thinner and lighter while still maintaining its affordable price. Then there is talk of a new iPad Mini with a bigger screen. This will be the first update to the smaller tablet since 2019 so it should represent an important upgrade over the current model.
With high-quality hardware and a huge wealth of recording apps, tools, and effects, iPads are great tools for producing music. While the iPad Pros may be overkill, the base iPad and iPad Mini are legitimate pieces of studio equipment that might be worth the investment. If you are currently looking for one on your own, it might be worth waiting for an official announcement.
